Anchoring : do we need new solutions to an old problem or do we have old solutions for a new problem ?

We propose a model to represent knowledge in an agent possibly participating to a multi-agent system, such that the anchoring problem can be faced by well known techniques. We discuss how this model could reliably support the instantiation of concepts by aggregating percepts affected by uncertainty, sensed by several sensors, and obtained from different agents.

Postoperative atrial fibrillation: an old problem crying for new solutions.

I n this issue of the Journal, Mueller and colleagues1 report on their experience with postoperative atrial arrhythmias in a series of 183 patients who underwent isolated single coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with the left internal thoracic artery placed to the left anterior descending coronary artery. The authors observed that the prevalence of postoperative atrial arrhythmias was simi...

Bioreactors – New Solutions for Old Problems

A major effort has been invested in making bioreactors more efficient. The goal has been achieved in several steps. Firstly, a replacement of the traditional rotation movement by an oscillating up and down movement of stirring discs driven by an electromagnet yields several important advantages. A soft, whole volume movement of the medium results in optimal gas distribution throughout the mediu...

Generating New Magnetic Universe Solutions from Old

In this paper we apply the techniques which have been developed over the last few decades for generating nontrivially new solutions of the EinsteinMaxwell equations from seed solutions for simple spacetimes. The simple seed spacetime which we choose is the “magnetic universe” to which we apply the Ehlers transformation. Three interesting non-singular metrics are generated. Two of these may be d...

New Solutions to an Old Equation

We present a brief historical overview of the classical theory of a radiating point charge, described by the Lorentz-Dirac equation. A recent development is the discovery of tunnelling of a charge through a potential barrier, in a completely classical context. Also, a concrete example is discussed of the existence of several physically acceptable solutions for a range of initial data. We end by...
